Legos are not only for construction plays but also for preparing dozens of activities. This is one of them. Great for color or shape sorting/matching plays. While using small pieces for preschoolers, for younger kids you can use duplo legos . They are also great for math activities.
You can sort your toys into the colors. We made frames with popsicle sticks and filled inside them with the same color of figurines.
There are a million ways of creating a color sorting/matching play. My son started to enjoy color sorting activities when he was 2 years old. A few months later we added patterns to the colors. Even though he cannot say the names of colors properly, at least sorting and matching is too much fun for him. I want to add also that rubber bands are great for helping to develop hand muscles. This activity is great for fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination too.
Some activities include many skill acquisitions. Like this one. It is great for fine motor skills. While sorting colors, kids are using their tiny hand muscles actively and developing their hand-eye coordination at the same time. The best part of the activity is that it is practical to prepare.
Q-tips are great for tracing activities. If you haven’t tried to use them yet, you can give a start with easy lines and numbers.
We pressed the cookie cutters on foam to get shapes. Foam is great material to prepare very quick setups. We used pipe cleaners and colorful foams for this shape and color sorting activity. If you want to turn it into numbers activity you can write number on foams. It is very good hand exercise at the same time. It includes in many motor skills.
The best place to play is nature and the best resources are in the nature. We prepared a color board just before having a walk in the forest. It was an amazing spring welcoming play for us.
